London Business School PhD candidate Baizhi Song has been awarded second place in the 2023 INFORMS Transportation Science & Logistics Society Best Student Paper Award competition for his paper ‘Optimizing the path towards plastic-free oceans’.

Co-authored with Jean Pauphilet (London Business School), Dick den Hertog (University of Amsterdam), Bruno Sainte-Rose (The Ocean Cleanup) and Yannick Pham (The Ocean Cleanup), the paper details efforts to increase the quantity of plastic collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by the Dutch NGO The Ocean Cleanup.

The researchers demonstrate that the adoption of their route optimization algorithm allows the quantity of collected plastic to be increased by 60%, significantly improving the efficiency of The Ocean Cleanup’s operation and accelerating efforts to rid the world’s oceans of plastic pollution.

Commenting on the award, Baizhi Song said: "I am grateful for the committee’s recognition, and extend my deepest thanks to my collaborators for their support. Let us continue our research journey towards cleaner oceans!"
