Esin Akan had a wealth of experience in the fashion industry but had never ventured into running her own business before arriving at LBS for the Executive MBA London programme. However, by the time she graduated, she was already running a successful brand, with many of her creations stocked in some of the world’s biggest retailers. “I wanted to pursue an MBA to explore and pivot to a career in healthcare. I was so curious about the concept of public healthcare, especially after my happen-chance cancer diagnosis, that I wanted to pursue an MBA only in Europe, where public healthcare existed in a way that would be unthinkable in the US. Before making the move, I visited several MBA programmes across Europe. When I arrived at LBS for an open day, I felt instantly at home - I loved the diversity and the multiculturalism on campus and in London. But what resonated the most with me was the kindness and generosity of the students I met that day on campus. Part of Amina Taher's secret for success is taking the time to listen to people – that could be customers, cabin crew, but especially her team. When Taher joined the Brand and Marketing department in August 2019, she started by making 15-minute speed dates with the 100 people who work there to get to know them and what they do. Split into five divisions of brand, global marketing, social media, digital and the in-house creative agency, they support all the brand and marketing activities for the Etihad Aviation Group in more than 50 countries, round the clock, in combination with a roster of external creative agencies.

Taher has a treasure trove of partnerships and sponsorships to play with, including the Premier League’s Manchester City who play in the Etihad Stadium in shirts bearing the airline’s name and a role as the official airline of international fashion weeks including London, Milan, New York and Mumbai. But Taher also took the step of launching Etihad’s first brand audit since the airline started in 2003.

Oriol Fuertes Cabassa could see that the way we look after the long-term ill and elderly had gone wrong. So he founded a company – taking a massive pay cut – to do something about it.

That shouldn’t be surprising for a man who measures his life in terms of direct social impact per hour worked – something he says stems from inheriting his mother’s boundless desire to help others. After giving up his job at global consultancy McKinsey to start homecare provider QIDA in March 2018, his approach has been a success, and much of it he credits to his MBA at LBS.

Now approaching its fourth year in business, QIDA (pronounced ‘cuida’, which translates to “care” in Spanish) cares for 3,500 new elderly patients every year, providing 8,000 hours of care a day, which equates to more than 240,000 hours of care a month! Carers, too, are taken care of with the business paying its carers 20% more than the market rate as part of its mission to raise the social status of the profession.

Sasha Sabharwal’s (MiM2021) undergraduate degree was in pharmacy, but with a strong interest in business, she was attracted to a commercial career in the fast-moving consumer goods sector. Having undertaken two business internships, she knew that to build a career in this field she required more knowledge of the business world, and that the Masters in Management (MiM) at London Business School could equip her with this. Following her graduation, Sasha successfully secured a three-year sales and marketing graduate placement at Unilever, with the support of the London Business School Career Centre.
