Keeping it flexible

“I joined London Business School in 2012 as a digital communications executive responsible for promoting degree programmes to external candidates. I wanted a more specialised role and LBS offered me that opportunity. Since then I’ve had two promotions - I now lead on all digital communications across the degree portfolio.

“There are just two people in my team. We’re responsible for writing inspiring sales copy and promoting the programmes to external candidates. Every day is varied, which I love, and I have a high level of autonomy. That’s really important to me. I meet with a range of different stakeholders - everybody from admissions managers and the wider recruitment team to the marketing department - working to build exciting communications and monthly campaigns to send out to candidates.

“LBS has been really good to me. I worked full-time in the office until I went on maternity leave, but since November 2018 I’ve been working flexibly. I live in Birmingham now, so I work two days in the office and three days at home. It provides a great work/life balance and all the benefits of being a full-time staff member while working remotely. I still really enjoy my London days – despite a 6-hour round trip commute, they mean I can have my meetings face-to-face and have that all-important weekly interaction.

Giving back

“One of the benefits that I’ve loved most about working at LBS is the option to spend five days a year doing volunteer work. In 2017, following on from the whole Degree Education away day, we were given the opportunity to propose new initiatives we wanted to get involved in. I pitched the idea of a youth academy which my team then put to senior management – we won, and LBS Enterprise for Schools was born.

“LBS Enterprise for School is designed to help LBS give back to the local community. The inaugural event involved about 50 students coming to campus from 5 local schools to develop ideas for a new app that facilitated learning. 27 staff volunteered to help out – it was such a great event. The pupils arrived really shy, but by the end they were amazingly confident.”

“Diversity is properly celebrated here. There’s a sense of belonging. Everyone at LBS is valued and treated as an individual. The overarching perspective across the student body and staff is hugely international.

“I tell people to take advantage of everything that London Business School has to offer, because compared to most companies, it’s a lot. Along with obvious benefits like the gym and the season ticket loan, there’s more subtle things like networking, professional and personal development - I’ve not even tapped into half of it yet. I’d advise newcomers just to get your head down and do a good job. Use the fantastic network you have here.
